Emanuele Maiorana (2024), "Transmuting Wearable Sensor Data: From Inertial to Electrical-like Measurements of Heart Activity", 5th International Conference on Deep Learning Techniques and Application (DeLTA) 2024.
AbstractWearable sensor technology is revolutionizing several research fields, ranging from healthcare to fitness monitoring or biometric recognition, thanks to its many advantages against potential alternatives, such as non-invasiveness and long-term operation capabilities. In more detail, seismocardiography (SCG) and gyrocardiography (GCG) are emerging as useful tools for cardiovascular assessment, relying on inertial measurements of cardiac activity. However, the knowledge and confidence about these signals is still limited in many fields, including the medical one, where the use of electrical measurements, such as those obtained via electrocardiography (ECG), is largely preferred. This paper presents a pioneering study about the possibility of converting SCG and GCG data into ECG-like representations, with the aim of expanding the applicability of inertial wearable sensors to scenarios where their characteristics could provide relevant benefits, yet there could still be the need to exploit knowledge regarding electrical heart activity measurements. In more detail, the effectiveness of recurrent neural networks (RNNs) in performing such task is here investigated. Extensive experimentation on a public dataset demonstrates the feasibility and efficacy of the proposed method in generating signals that significantly resemble the desired ECG data. The capability of the proposed approach in reproducing relevant characteristics of ECG signals in the created data is evaluated considering two potential real-world applications, regarding heart rate estimation and ECG-based biometric recognition.

Massaroni, (2024), " Classification of Aortic Stenosis Patients via ECG-Independent Multi-Site Measurements of Cardiac-Induced Accelerations and Angular Velocities at the Skin Level," IEEE Open Journal of Engineering in Medicine and Biology, 2024.
Abstract: Goal: To evaluate the suitability of seismocardiogram (SCG) and gyrocardiogram (GCG) recorded at the skin level to classify aortic stenosis (AS) patients from healthy volunteers, and to determine the optimal sensor position for the classification. Methods: SCG and GCG were recorded along three axes at five chest locations of fifteen healthy subjects and AS patients. Signal frames underwent feature extraction in frequency and time-frequency domains. Then, binary classification was performed through three machine learning and three deep learning methods, considering SCG, GCG, and their combination. Results: The highest classification accuracies were achieved using Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier, with the best sensor locations being at the mitral valve for SCG signals (92.3% accuracy) and at the pulmonary valve for GCG (92.1%). Combining SCG and GCG data allows for further improvement in the achievable accuracy (93.5%). Jointly exploiting SCG and GCG signals and both SVM- and ResNet18-based classifiers, 40 s of monitoring allows for reaching 97.2% accuracy with a single sensor on the pulmonary valve. Conclusions: Combining SCG and GCG with adequate machine learning and deep learning classifiers allows reliable classification of AS patients.

Abstract: In the field of deep learning, understanding the rationale behind an automatic system’s decisions is essential for building users’ trust and ensuring accountability. In this regard, explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) recently emerged as a valuable tool to offer insights into a model behavior. The present study focuses on vein-based biometric recognition, investigating techniques allowing to identify which regions of a wrist-vein image are mostly exploited to carry out a verification process. Toward this aim, our research exploits vision transformers (ViTs), which rely on self-attention mechanisms to automatically detect and exploit the input parts with the content deemed most relevant for its further processing. Two distinct wrist-vein pattern datasets, namely PUT-wrist and FYO-wrist, are employed to fine-tune the considered models. Their behavior is interpreted by analyzing the attention maps generated when applying the trained networks to vein-pattern images, investigating which regions are exploited to decide a user’s identity. The proposed approach testifies that the performed recognition process can improve when a ViT focuses on areas with significant vein pattern content, achieving verification performance surpassing state-of-the-art methods in open-set scenarios, while promoting transparency through explainability.

Abstract: Waste material classification is a challenging yet important task in waste management. The realization of low-cost waste classification systems and methods is critical to meet the ever-increasing demand for efficient waste management and recycling. In this paper, we demonstrate a simple, compact and low-cost classification system based on optical reflectance measurements in the short-wave infrared for the segregation of waste materials such as plastics, paper, glass, and aluminium. The system comprises a small set of LEDs and one single broadband photodetector. All devices are controlled through low-cost and low-power electronics, and data are gathered and managed via a computer interface. The proposed system reaches accuracy levels as high as 94.3% when considering seven distinct materials and 97.0% when excluding the most difficult to classify, thus representing a valuable proof-of-concept for future system developments.

Abstract: Wearable devices have been recently proposed to perform biometric recognition, leveraging on the uniqueness of the collectable physiological traits to generate discriminative identifiers. Most of the studies conducted on this topic have exploited heart-related signals, sensing the cardiac activity either through electrical measurements using electrocardiography, or with optical recordings employing photoplethysmography. In this paper we instead propose a system performing BIOmetric recognition using Wearable Inertial Sensors detecting Heart activity (BIOWISH). In more detail, we investigate the feasibility of exploiting mechanical measurements obtained through seismocardiography and gyrocardiography to verify the identity of a subject. Several feature extractors and classifiers, including deep learning techniques relying on siamese training, are employed to derive distinctive characteristics from the considered signals, so as to differentiate between legitimate users and impostors. A multi-session database, comprising acquisitions taken from subjects performing different activities, is employed to perform experimental tests. The obtained results testify that identifiers derived from measurements of chest vibrations, collected by wearable inertial sensors, could be employed to guarantee high recognition performance, even when considering short-time recordings. Explainability methods have been also employed to derive some insights about the aspects relevant to perform predictions for both people and activity recognition tasks.

Abstract: A crucial yet difficult task for waste management is the identification of raw materials like plastic, glass, aluminum, and paper. Most previous studies use the diffused reflection spectroscopy for classification purposes. Despite the benefits in terms of speed and simplicity offered by modern compact spectrometers, their cost and the need for an external, wide-spectrum source of illumination create complications. To address this issue, the present paper proposes a discrete spectroscopy method that utilizes short-wave infrared (SWIR) reflectance to identify waste materials, exploiting a small set of selected wavelengths. This approach reduces the complexity of the classification data analysis and offers a more practical alternative to the conventional method. The proposed system comprises a single germanium photodetector and 10 different light emitting diodes (LEDs). The LED wavelengths are selected to maximize the system sensitivity towards a set of seven different waste materials. Using a classification strategy relying on support vector machines, the proposed methodology reaches a classification accuracy up to 98%.

Abstract: Vascular biometrics, including finger-vein recognition, are growing both in terms of academic research and industrial systems deployed in real life. In this article, we present an effective, portable, low-cost, and fully open-source finger-vein data acquisition system: the schematics, printed circuit board (PCB) Gerber and drill files, 3-D models for the 3-D printed case, device software and control, and data collection software for PC are made available. We have collected a test database consisting of 30 people/180 class finger-vein images and obtained preliminary recognition results with half-total error rate (HTER) = 2.8%, using state-of-the-art maximum curvature (MC)/Miura matching (MM) pipeline, which is a promising indicator for the viability of the proposed concept and further research.

AbstractRecent studies have shown that physiological signals related to blood pressure and heart rate can be estimated in a contactless modality from facial videos using remote photoplethysmography (rPPG). This has paved the way to the development of techniques that can acquire and manipulate the rPPG signals recoverable from facial videos without affecting their visual appearance. The goal of this paper is to analyze the detectability of this new kind of forgery, here referred to as rPPG deepfake videos. Specifically, we propose a two-stream method based on the analysis of rPPG deepfake videos at both spatial and temporal levels. The experimental results obtained from tests performed on samples taken from two distinct databases demonstrate that our method performs better than popular deep learning methods in the rPPG deepfake detection task.

Abstract: Representations of biometric traits to be used in automatic recognition systems are typically learned with the goal of obtaining significant discriminative capabilities, that is, generating features that are notably different when produced by traits of different subjects, while maintaining an appropriate consistency for a given user. Nonetheless, discriminability is not the only desirable property of a biometric representation. For instance, the mutual independence of the coefficients in the employed templates is a valuable property when designing biometric template protection schemes. In fact, managing representations with independent coefficients allows to maximize the achievable security. In this paper we propose different learning strategies to obtain biometric representations with the property of statistical independence among coefficients, while preserving discriminability. In order to achieve this goal, different strategies are employed to train convolutional autoencoders. As a proof of concept, the effectiveness of the proposed approaches is tested by considering biometric recognition systems using both finger-vein and palm-vein patterns.

Abstract: In recent years, the need for secure, reliable, and easy-to-use automatic recognition approaches has favored the diffusion of biometric systems. Such methods exploit individuals’ physical or behavioral characteristics to differentiate between legitimate users and potential impostors. In this article, we evaluate the feasibility of recognizing a subject by exploiting the electromagnetic (EM) scattering from the user’s hand or wrist when it interacts with an EM field at microwave (MW) frequencies. In detail, the proposed recognition framework requires a subject to place a hand between two antennas emitting at frequencies in the -band, i.e., between 8.2 and 12.4 GHz. The measured scattering parameters are employed as discriminative characteristics to perform user recognition. To improve the achievable recognition performance, an EM model of the involved body parts has been studied and used to design a metasurface (MTS) wristband that could emphasize subject-specific characteristics. The effectiveness of the proposed approach has been tested by collecting multiple measurements from 43 subjects during two distinct acquisition sessions. The obtained results testify that the proposed approach can be used either to implement a robust stand-alone biometric system or exploited together with other well-established hand characteristics such as fingerprint, palm print, or hand vein to improve the achievable recognition performance.

Abstract: Template protection is an issue of paramount importance for the design of secure and privacy-compliant biometric recognition systems. Template unlinkability, together with template irreversibility, is an essential requirement to properly guarantee template protection. In fact, it ensures that templates generated from the same trait, but used in different applications, cannot be linked to the same identity. This paper deals with the design of a system satisfying the unlinkability requirement. The robustness of the proposed solution is evaluated by exploiting methods stemming from the theory of stochastic optimization, as well as by using quantitative measures specifically proposed to characterize the unlinkability of biometric protection schemes. A case study using finger-vein biometrics is considered to test the proposed cryptosystem on non-ideal data. The proposed scheme guarantees 128 bits of security with acceptable false recognition rates in real-life conditions. Moreover, we provide guidelines to determine the parameters of the transformations to be applied to real biometric traits so as to ensure proper recognition, security, and unlinkability performance.

Abstract: In recent years, vein-based biometric recognition has received ever-increasing attention from both academia and industry, due to the advantages it offers over traditional biometric traits such as fingerprint, iris, and face. Nonetheless, some issues related to the use of vein biometrics still need to be investigated and understood. Specifically, in this study, we speculate about the gender-related variations in vein patterns, and their effects on biometric verification performance. An analysis on the feasibility of recognizing male and female subjects depending on their hand-vein patterns, and on the level of similarity characterizing the biometric templates extracted from male and female populations, are here carried out considering three different databases. Specifically, the public VERA dataset, containing samples of palm-vein patterns, and two datasets containing images of finger-vein patterns, i.e., the UTFVP public database, and an in-house dataset collected with an on-the-move contactless modality, are here considered. The obtained experimental results show that the approach here proposed to perform gender recognition allows to reach an accuracy up to 95.83% on the public finger-vein UTFVP dataset, and to outperform the current state-of-the-art on the public palm-vein VERA dataset, with accuracy at 93.55%. It is also shown that vein-based biometric systems can benefit from the exploitation of information regarding the gender of the considered subjects, with achievable recognition rates that can be significantly improved by designing a biometric verification system relying on gender-specific models for extracting the employed discriminative templates.

Abstract: Thanks to their ability to monitor physical activity and health-related parameters, wearable devices are becoming more and more popular. In addition to what they already offer, an interesting capability achievable through such devices is biometric recognition. The physiological traits recorded by wearable devices may in fact possess distinctive properties which could allow to recognize their legitimate users, and detect unauthorized usage. In this paper, the most recent advances accomplished in this field are reviewed, and a critical analysis on the current state of the art, as well as on the issues still open, is provided.

AbstractBiometric recognition systems exploit individuals' physical or behavioral characteristics to automatically discriminate between legitimate users and impostors, thus allowing to implement secure access control mechanisms for either physical locations or logical services. In this contribution, we investigate the feasibility of recognizing a subject through the analysis of the electromagnetic response obtained when a specific part of the body interacts with the electromagnetic field radiated by a microwave antenna. In detail, measurements of the reflection coefficient resulting when different subjects place their hands upon the radiating aperture of the antenna are taken and used to extract discriminative features characterizing the involved users. To evaluate whether the considered recognition modality could be exploited in real-world applications, multiple recordings are taken from each of the considered subjects in distinct days and employed in the performed experimental tests to estimate the achievable recognition performance. The obtained results show that the proposed paradigm can be effectively employed to implement a stand-alone system performing biometric recognition, or exploited to design multi-biometric frameworks when used together with other well-established recognition modalities, such as those based on palm prints or palm veins.

AbstractSwapping faces with deep learning technology to generate realistic fake videos/images (a.k.a, deepfakes) has drawn great public con-cerns recently. Numerous approaches have been proposed to iden-tify fake contents; however, less work has been dedicated to pro-tecting the source faces in an active way. In this paper, we stand for a legitimate faceswap service provider and present an approach called Source-ID- Tracker (SIDT), which aims to protect the identity of source faces in deepfakes from malicious uses. As a plug-in, the encoder of SIDT implicitly embeds a source face image into a deep-fake image while ensuring the resultant encoded image is visually indistinguishable from the deepfake image. After sharing through social media, the embedded source face and its identity can still be recovered with a decoder. Experimental results show that the pro-posed model achieves a promising performance, in terms of reconstruction quality and attribution inference accuracy, in revealing the hidden source face.

Abstract: Biometric recognition is nowadays employed in several real-world applications to automatically authenticate legitimate users. Nonetheless, using biometric traits as personal identifiers raises many privacy and security issues, not affecting traditional approaches performing automatic people recognition. In order to cope with such concerns, and to guarantee the required level of security to the employed biometric templates, several protection schemes have been designed and proposed. The robustness against possible attacks brought to such approaches has been typically investigated under the assumption that the employed biometric representations comprise mutually independent coefficients. Unfortunately, the parametric representations adopted in most biometric recognition systems commonly consist of strongly correlated features, which may be therefore unsuitable to be used in biometric cryptosystems since they would lower the achievable security. In this paper we propose a framework for evaluating the statistical independence of features employed in biometric recognition systems. Furthermore, we investigate the feasibility of improving the mutual independence of representations defined through deep learning approaches by resorting to architectures involving autoencoders, and evaluate the characteristics of the novel templates through the introduced metrics. Tests performed using templates derived from finger-vein patterns are performed to evaluate the introduced framework for statistical independence and the proposed template generation strategies.

Abstract: Electroencephalographic (EEG) signals can reveal the cost required to deal with information structure mismatches in speech or in text contexts. The present study investigates the costs related to the processing of different associations between the syntactic categories of Noun and Verb and the information categories of Topic and Focus. It is hypothesized that - due to the very nature (respectively, predicative and non-predicative) of verbal and nominal reference - sentences with Topics realized by verbs, and Focuses realized by nouns, should impose greater processing demands, compared to the decoding of nominal Topics and verbal Focuses. Data from event-related potential (ERP) measurements revealed an N400 effect in response to both Nouns encoded as Focus and Verbs packaged as Topic, confirming that the cost associated with information structure processing follows discourse-driven expectations also with respect to the word-class level.

Abstract: Biometrics has nowadays become a preferred solution for systems requiring secure authentication. However, the usage of biometric characteristics raises significant concerns regarding personal data protection and privacy. Several template protection schemes have been therefore proposed to conceal the employed identifiers, while still ensuring the ability to efficiently recognise users. In this paper, we propose and analyse three different approaches generating cancelable templates from finger vein features. A thorough analysis of the considered methods is conducted to investigate their impact on the achievable recognition performance, as well as their security in terms of renewability and unlinkability. Furthermore, a specific attack is designed to evaluate the irreversibility of the protection scheme providing the best recognition performance.

Abstract: In these years, biometric recognition based on hand vein patterns is receiving an always increasing attention from both industry and academia, thanks to the advantages it offers with respect to conventional approaches, such as those relying on fingerprint, iris, or face. Nevertheless, there are still several properties of vein traits that need to be investigated and well understood. In this paper, we here analyze the level of similarity, evaluated in terms of recognition rate of a biometric system, of vein patterns in the fingers, palms, and dorsa of a person's left and right hands. In other words, we analyse whether a subject, enrolled using vein patterns, either finger-vein, palm-vein, dorsal-vein, from one hand, can be recognized using the homologous patterns from the other hand. Our investigation is conducted using deep-learning-based feature extraction approaches, three different vein modalities, and four different databases. The obtained experimental results show that corresponding fingers, palms, and dorsal regions from different hands of the same subject show more resemblance with respect to the traits from the same hand of different persons. Furthermore, our findings point out that similarities among vein patterns in corresponding fingers could be used for recognition purposes, while this still cannot be applied to palm and dorsum vein patterns.

Abstract: Biometric characteristics such as fingerprint and face are nowadays employed in several real-world automatic recognition systems. Yet, there is still a notable interest for innovative recognition approaches, possibly involving traits offering properties not available in mainstream solutions. Brain activity is among the novel characteristics recently investigated for biometric recognition, with several studies confirming the existence of subject-specific information within signals acquired through electroencephalography (EEG). Unfortunately, EEG data are typically characterized by a significant intra-class variability, especially when recorded at different times, which makes it hard to design hand-crafted features retaining enough discriminative power to be used in recognition systems. For this reason, deep learning strategies are often employed to extract useful information from the treated data. In this paper, we specifically focus on the exploitation of transfer learning approaches to define reliable biometric templates from EEG traits. Specifically, a time-frequency EEG representation is used as input to networks originally designed for image classification tasks, and here fine-tuned to be employed as feature extractors for biometric recognition purposes. Tests performed in open-set verification scenarios, over a longitudinal database comprising EEG acquisition from 45 subjects spanning a period of more than one year, testify the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract: The performance of a biometric system is commonly evaluated by the obtained recognition rates and comparing the results against the ones reported in the literature on the same database. An aspect that has not received the deserved attention in the literature concerns the influence, on the achieved rates, of the test protocol employed to select the enrol and probe data. We provide a detailed analysis of the impact of the experimental choices on the estimated performance, considering the recom-mendations provided by ISO/IEC 19795 standard. We use the UTFVP finger vein database, reproducing results presented in the literature using multiple protocols. Our experiments highlight the possibility of obtaining equal error rates reduced by half simply by changing the test protocol.

Abstract: Signature recognition is one of the most widespread and legally accepted methodology to authenticate a person's identity. In this work, we show how a haptic device can be used to acquire in-air 3D signatures, and provide the time-dependent position and orientation characteristics needed to effectively perform user verification. Dynamic time warping and hidden Markov models are here employed to compare samples acquired during the enrolment and verification stages. The recognition performance achieved when testing the proposed system on samples captured from 52 subjects testify the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Furthermore, a longitudinal analysis carried out on data from a subset of 21 subjects, for which two recording sessions have been taken at an average distance of four months, demonstrates that effective recognition can be performed even at long time distances from the enrolment.

Abstract: The interest in wearable devices has tremendously increased in recent years, thanks the wide range of possible applications in which they can be used. As the employed sensors are able to capture relevant physiological signals, it has been lately proposed to exploit data collected by these instruments for automatic biometric recognition purposes. In this regard, a significant amount of studies has been conducted on the discriminative characteristics of the hearth activity. Within this context, in this paper we investigate the feasibility of recognizing people exploiting measurements of the mechanical vibrations of the chest, induced by the heart activity. To this aim, the effectiveness of combining signals acquired through seismocardiography and gyrocardiography is here evaluated. In order to evaluate the existence of discriminative characteristics within the considered signals, deep learning techniques relying on transfer learning have been applied on the considered measurements. Tests performed on ten subjects have been conducted in order to assess the influence on recognition performance of the positioning on the chest of the employed sensors, as well as the dependence on the posture assumed by the subjects while taking the employed recordings. The obtained results testify that promising recognition rates could be actually achieved when properly placing the considered devices.

Abstract: In the relatively recent past, the analysis of keystroke dynamics for biometric recognition purposes has intrigued researchers, since practical evidences have shown differences in the typing behaviours of distinct subjects. This area of research has become even more appealing since the emergence and evolution of mobile smartphones, given their pervasiveness and intensive use in real-life applications. In addition, unlike hard keyboards used with computers, mobile smartphones offer the possibility of exploiting embedded sensors to augment the information acquired when typing on their soft keyboards. This study discusses the state of the art of keystroke-dynamics-based automatic recognition system, exclusively when dealing with mobile devices, for both verification and identification purposes. In more details, the databases employed, the features selected, the methodologies implemented, and the performance achieved through the technological advances introduced in the last years, are here overviewed.

G. Cervino (2021), "Multibiometric system based on Face Video and Heart Rate Estimation", In IEEE International Workshop on Biometrics and Forensics (IWBF) 2021.
Abstract: Biometric systems have acquired a central role in identity recognition because of the security and convenience they offer over traditional authentication system such as those based on the knowledge of passwords or the possession of tokens. Multibiometric systems have been introduced to increase the performance of mono-modal systems, to increase their security and to make the systems more universal. The diffusion of biometric systems has stimulated the attempts to fraudulent access. Adversarial Examples (AE) belong to the most effective category of attacks. They are input samples specifically designed to fool a target biometric system: they can be implemented using several approaches and algorithms. Therefore, appropriate and effective defense strategies need to be developed. Despite the researchers carried out different solutions, it is still an open challenge. Recently, researchers described how it is possible to extract several physiological parameters from videos containing faces. In fact, imperceptible movements for humans contain information on breathing rate and emotional status, while the blood flow produces an effect on the light diffused from the face skin. The latter can be acquired using RGB camera to extract Hearth Rate (HR) and the Photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal. This research is twofold: the development a multibiometric system based on face video and HR estimation to assess the performance obtained both in verification and identification task and the evaluation of robustness against AE.

Abstract: The popularity of wearable devices, such as smart glasses, chestbands, and wristbands, is nowadays rapidly growing, thanks to the fact that they can be used to track physical activity and monitor users’ health. Recently, researchers have proposed to exploit their capability to collect physiological signals for enabling automatic user recognition. Wearable devices inherently provide the means for detecting their unauthorized usage, or for being used as front-end in biometric recognition systems controlling the access to either physical or virtual locations and services. The present work evaluates the feasibility of performing biometric recognition using signals captured by wearable devices, considering data collected through off-the-shelf commercial wristbands, and comparing recordings taken during two distinct sessions separated by an average time of 7 days. In more detail, recognition is performed leveraging on electrodermal activity (EDA) and blood volume pulse (BVP), considering measurements taken from 17 subjects performing natural activities such as attending or teaching lectures. Several tests have been carried out to determine the most effective representation of the considered EDA and BVP signals, as well as the most suitable classifier. The best recognition performance has been achieved exploiting convolutional neural networks to extract discriminative characteristics from the combined spectrograms of the employed EDA and BVP data, guaranteeing average correct identification rate of 98.58% for test samples lasting 30 seconds.

Abstract: The accurate localization of facial landmarks is at the core of several face analysis tasks, such as face recognition and facial expression analysis, to name a few. In this work, we propose a novel localization approach based on a deep learning architecture that utilizes two paired cascaded subnetworks with convolutional neural network units. The cascaded units of the first subnetwork estimate heatmap-based encodings of the landmarks’ locations, while the cascaded units of the second subnetwork receive as inputs the outputs of the corresponding heatmap estimation units, and refine them through regression. The proposed scheme is experimentally shown to compare favorably with contemporary state-of-the-art schemes, especially when applied to images depicting challenging localization conditions.

Abstract: Considerable interest has been recently devoted to the exploitation of brain activity as biometric identifier in automatic recognition systems, with a major focus on data acquired through electroencephalography (EEG). Several researches have in fact confirmed the presence of discriminative characteristics within brain signals recorded while performing specific mental tasks. Yet, to make EEG-based recognition appealing for practical applications, it would be highly advisable to investigate the existence and permanence of such distinctive traits while performing different mental tasks. In this regard, the present study evaluates the feasibility of performing task-independent EEG-based biometric recognition. A deep learning approach using siamese convolutional neural networks is employed to extract, from the considered EEG recordings, subject-specific template representations. An extensive set of experimental tests, performed on a multi-session database comprising EEG data acquired from 45 subjects while performing six different tasks, is employed to evaluate whether it is actually possible to verify the identity of a subject using brain signals, regardless the performed mental task.

Abstract: The recent progress in deep learning has led to a rapid change in the way biometric data can be handled, offering new opportunities for further research on physical, behavioral, and cognitive biometric recognition. In particular, conventional modalities for preprocessing, extracting features, and comparing templates derived from biometric traits have been swiftly altered, replacing the search for hand-crafted features with the ever increasing use of generalized deep learning models and transfer learning, able to guarantee notably-high recognition performance. This study investigates the capabilities of deep learning approaches in performing vein pattern verification. Specifically, recent advances in the design of convolutional neural networks, introduced to increase the inter-class variability and decrease the intra-class variability of the generated representations, are here taken into account to speculate on the effects on recognition performance of the selection for the most suitable loss function. Experimental tests conducted on finger vein, palm vein, and hand dorsum vein patterns testify the effectiveness of the proposed frameworks, able to exceed current state-of-the-art performance on five different publicly available vein datasets.

Abstract: Vein patterns have been nowadays established as a reliable and convenient solution to implement biometric recognition systems. Yet, there is still a relevant gap between the real potential of such modality and its current usage in state-ofthe-art commercial solutions. Actually, one of the major issue limiting the proper exploitation of deep learning approaches for vein-based biometric recognition is related to the moderate sample size of existing publicly available datasets, typically not large enough to perform a comprehensive training of dedicated networks. In order to mitigate the lack of training generalization, instead of proposing novel convolutional neural networks to be trained from scratch, we here investigate the usefulness of employing existing architectures, and applying transfer learning to design a highly-efficient biometric recognition system based on vein patterns. Verification performance in open-set scenario is evaluated applying the proposed approach to three different kinds of vein data, that is, finger veins, palm veins, and hand dorsal veins. Results exceeding current literature are obtained on the SDUMLA, PolyU, and Bosphorus vein datasets, with equal error rates in open-set verification conditions at 0,41%, 0,006%, and 5,63%, respectively.

A novel approach consisting of a convolutional neural network (CNN), trained in a supervised manner, cascaded with an auto-encoder, trained in an unsupervised way, is here exploited. In more detail, a novel densely-connected convolutional autoencoder is here used on top of backbone CNNs. This architecture aims at increasing the discriminative capability of the features generated from hand vein patterns. Experimental tests on finger, palm, and dorsal veins show that the proposed approach leads to an improvement of the recognition rates with respect to the use of the sole CNNs for feature extraction. The achieved performance are superior to the current state of the art in vein biometric verification.

Abstract: With the recent widespread usage of mobile devices there has been an increasing research for automated recognition systems which could be implemented with the limited resources offered by such tools. Specifically, several biometric recognition approaches have been proposed in literature, most of them relying on the cameras, microphones, or gyroscopes installed from factories in smartphones to acquire biometric traits such as face, speech, and gait. Another interesting modality which could be exploited in handheld devices, without requiring any additional hardware upgrade, is keystroke dynamics, with this term referring to the typing behaviour characterizing each user. This trait is especially suited to perform recognition on mobile devices, leveraging on data recorded while typing a password or a personal identification number (PIN) to access any physical or logical facility. This paper evaluates the feasibility of performing keystroke-dynamics-based biometric verification by modeling the acquired sequences of typed characters with Gaussian mixture models. Three different public datasets, comprising recordings related to both passwords and PINs, are exploited to testify the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract: The exploitation of brain signals for biometric recognition purposes has received significant attention from the scientific community in the last decade, with most of the efforts so far devoted to the quest for discriminative information within electroencephalography (EEG) recordings. Yet, currently-achievable recognition rates are still not comparable with those granted by more-commonly-used biometric characteristics, posing an issue for the practical deployment of EEG-based recognition in real-life applications. Within this regard, the present study investigates the effectiveness of deep learning techniques in extracting distinctive features from EEG signals. Both convolutional and recurrent neural networks, as well as their combinations, are employed as strategies to derive personal identifiers from the collected EEG data. In order to assess the robustness of the considered techniques, an extensive set of experimental tests is conducted under very challenging conditions, trying to determine whether it is feasible to identify subjects through their brain signals regardless the performed mental task, and comparing acquisitions collected at a temporal distance greater than one year. The obtained results suggest that the proposed networks are actually able to exploit the dynamic temporal behavior of EEG signals to achieve high-level accuracy for brain-based biometric recognition.

Abstract: Finger-vein-based biometric recognition technology has recently attracted the attention of both academia and industry because of its robustness against presentation attacks and the convenience of the acquisition process. As a matter of fact, some contactless vein-based recognition systems have already been deployed and commercialized. However, they require the users to keep their hands still over the acquisition device for a few seconds to perform recognition. In this study, we release this constraint and allow users to have their finger vein patterns acquired on the fly. To accomplish this goal, we introduce an ad-hoc acquisition architecture capable of capturing the finger vein structure using an array of low-cost cameras, and we propose a recognition framework based on the use of convolutional and recurrent neural networks. To test the proposed approach we acquire a finger vein image dataset, in video format at four different exposure times, from 100 subjects. The obtained experimental results show that, even in a very challenging scenario, the proposed system guarantees high performance levels, up to 99.13% recognition accuracy over the collected dataset.

Abstract: Biometric recognition based on finger-vein patterns is gaining more and more attention, as several approaches have been recently proposed to extract discriminative features from vascular structures. In this paper we investigate the similarity between vein patterns of symmetric fingers of the left and right hand of a subject. More in detail, we analyze the performance achievable when using symmetric fingers and geometry- or deep-learning-based feature extraction methods for recognition. A database with acquisitions from left and right index, medium, and ring fingers of 106 subjects is exploited for experimental tests.

Abstract: In this paper, we introduce a novel translation-invariant minutiae representation based on triple correlation for fingerprint biometric recognition. In contrast with other fingerprint representations with translation-invariant characteristics, the proposed one does not lose any information about the original trait, with the only exception of its absolute position. Nevertheless, triple correlation would be of little use, in its native form, for signal processing applications, due to its high-demanding memory requirements. By exploiting the intrinsic sparsity of the treated minutiae, we propose a sparse implementation of the employed triple correlation, allowing its use in practical application and the definition of a suitable comparison algorithm here introduced. The performed experimental tests show the suitability of the proposed triple-correlation representation for fingerprint minutiae comparison.

Abstract: The use of mobile devices is not anymore limited to personal communication but, especially with the widespread of smart devices, it enables a variety of operations like accessing the Internet, storing personal data, making payments, and gaining access to restricted services or areas. Being used for such sensitive applications, the implementation of secure mechanisms to access such devices is of paramount importance. As a matter of fact, most modern smartphones implement access control mechanisms based on either face, iris, or fingerprint biometric traits for secure user recognition, and several researches are conducted on further alternatives offering potential advantages in terms of convenience or performance. In this paper we study the effectiveness of employing keystroke dynamics to discriminate between genuine and impostor users of mobile devices. Specifically, deep learning techniques, based on convolutional neural networks, are here exploited to derive discriminative characteristics from the typing patterns of subjects entering personal identification numbers (PINs). A large database comprising keystroke dynamics acquisitions from 150 subjects, each typing two different kinds of PINs, either short or long, is exploited to conduct the performed experimental tests.

Abstract: In this paper, we introduce a novel minutiae-based matching algorithm for fingerprint recognition. The method is built on an elegant and straightforward mathematical formulation: the minutiae set is represented by a train of complex pulses and the matching algorithm is based on a simple crosscorrelation. We propose two different implementations. The first one exploits the intrinsic sparsity of the signal representing the minutiae set in order to construct an efficient implementation. The other relies on the Fourier transform to build a fixed-length representation, being thus suitable to be used in many biometric crypto-systems. The proposed method exhibits performance comparable with NIST's Bozorth3, that is a standard de facto for minutiae matching, but it shows to be more robust with cropped fingerprints.

Abstract: In the last years, several papers on EEG-based biometric recognition systems have been published. Specifically, most of the proposed contributions focus on brain signals recorded in resting state conditions, with either closed or open eyes. A common assumption is that the acquired signals are quasi-stationarity. In this paper, we investigate such property in terms of discriminative capability, and we analyze whether or not it holds throughout the entire duration of data collected over long periods. An extensive set of experimental tests, conducted over a database comprising signals collected from 50 subjects in three distinct acquisition sessions, shows that the most distinctive information of the brain signals is temporally located at the beginning of each recording.

Abstract: Most commercially available ultrasound imaging systems currently implement the delay and sum (DAS) beamforming. Alternative beamformers have been presented, offering higher performance at the expense of computational complexity, which has so far limited their practical real-time implementation. In particular, the Filtered-Delay Multiply and Sum (F-DMAS) beamformer, which adds the computation of signed square roots, absolute values and multiplications to DAS, was recently shown to be effective in improving resolution, dynamic range and overall image quality. In this work, we present the real-time implementation of the F-DMAS beamformer on the ULA-OP 256 research system. This is obtained through a reformulation of the F-DMAS algorithm that allows reducing its computational cost. Compared to DAS, F-DMAS images of a commercial phantom captured in real-time showed higher CR (up to +7 dB), better spatial resolution (up to 30%), but lower CNR (-40%).

Abstract: In this paper, we present a novel biometric cryptosystem obtaining perfect security, that is not leaking any information about the employed secret key from the knowledge of the stored helper data. While similar purposes have already been sought in the literature, the approaches proposed so far have been evaluated in terms of recognition performance under the unrealistic assumption of ideal statistical distributions for the considered biometric data. Conversely, in this paper, we investigate the applicability of the proposed framework to practical scenarios while managing a trade-off between privacy and recognition performance. This goal has been achieved by introducing a class of transformation functions enforcing zero-leakage secrecy, by designing an adaptive strategy for embedding the secret key bits into the selected features, and by developing a system parameters optimization strategy with respect to security, recognition performance, and privacy. Experimental tests conducted on real fingerprint data prove the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Abstract: Biometric recognition systems, despite the advantages provided with respect to traditional authentication methods, have some peculiar weaknesses which may allow an attacker being falsely recognized or accessing users' personal data. Among such vulnerabilities, in this paper, we speculate on the hill-climbing attack, i.e., the possibility for an attacker to exploit the scores produced by the matcher with the goal of generating synthetic biometric data, which could allow a false acceptance. More in detail, we focus on multibiometrics systems and investigate about the robustness of different system architectures, both parallel and serial fusion schemes, against the hill-climbing attack. Nonuniform quantization is also evaluated as a possible countermeasure for limiting the effectiveness of the considered attacks in terms of recognition success rate and average number of required attempts without affecting the recognition performance.

Abstract: In this paper we analyze the vulnerability to hill-climbing attacks of a biometric recognition system based on electroencephalography (EEG). It is assumed that an attacker can access the scores produced by the employed matcher, and use them to control the generation of synthetic EEG templates until achieving a successful authentication. To this aim, different general approaches relying on function optimization are evaluated and compared in terms of authentication success rate and average number of required attempts. The possibility of increasing the system robustness against this kind of attacks, without significantly affecting its recognition performance, is also investigated.
